After Sunday’s incident, when the island city suffered a major power failure, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking on Wednesday said they are making efforts to ensure this does not happen again. As a part this promise, BEST has made provisions for an alternate feed for Colaba, Navy Nagar and Cuffe Parade, which were worst hit by the power cut.

“If there are any problems with power, these areas will not suffer,” said OP Gupta, general manager, BEST.

The island city suffered from a power cut after a fire broke out and damaged Tata Power’s supply cables at BEST’s substation at Backbay Reclamation.

The BEST administration in a committee meeting on Wednesday, presented a preliminary report about the fire. The BEST suspects there has been contamination of gas in the station. To study this, a team of experts from Japanese company, Nissin Electric, will fly to this city this week. “After the fire, there has been a rise in temperature in the station because of which there is a risk of contamination. Since these gas insulated switchgears are made in Japan, a team of experts from Japan will study and suggest damage control steps if needed,” Gupta said.
