The railways on Wednesday decided on a new fare table, which will come into effect from April 1, a senior Central Railway (CR) official said There won’t be any hike in card tickets for first and second-class travellers. Also exempted are second-class monthly season tickets (MST). However, commuters who get monthly or quarterly pass to commute by first class will have to pay extra.

As per the new fare table, for a minimum distance of 10km there will be hike of Rs15. For instance, if travelling from CST to Dadar (9km) by first class earlier cost Rs240, you will now have to shell out Rs255. Commuting from Churchgate-Virar will cost Rs 870 instead of Rs 780. However, this amount is excluding the additional charges.

At present there are three types of additional charges levied on suburban monthly season ticket — Rs20 for development charge by railways, Rs20 MUTP surcharge (for 20km) and Rs10 Cidco surcharge, which is only applicable for Navi Mumbai stations.

Passenger associations have supported the move. “The hike is necessary as there has been no increase in fares in the past eight years. But, the railways should also provide passengers with better amenities and facilities,” said Subhash Gupta, president, Yatri Sangh Mumbai.

Currently, 70 lakh commuters travel by local trains in the city. “Of these, around 24.16 lakh commuters have monthly season tickets,” said Nitin Devid, PRO, Western Railway.
