A bench of Justice Chelameswar Prasad and Justice AK Sikri passed the order on Tuesday while deciding an appeal by the students who demanded admission on the ground that an inquiry by a regulatory body had found the admissions in colleges irregular.

The bench held the government responsible as it had failed to take action against the private institutions despite a probe indicting them. It said meritorious students were denied a chance to pursue their education and set aside the Bombay high court order.

The students had moved SC in 2013 against the HC order, which declined relief to them saying their pleas before it had become infructuous. The court observed since the new academic session had begun it was not possible for it to cancel the admissions.
