Still, he scoffed at suggestions that this was a political visit, saying it was a purely personal call. “I came to invite Raj Thackeray for the wedding of my younger brother Amol. We did not discuss any politics,” said Paranjpe. The wedding is scheduled for November 19 at Thane.

The strong results drawn by Thackeray in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, coupled with the dismal showing of the Sena, have fuelled fears of Sena leaders and grassroots workers deserting the party for the MNS.

Anand’s late father Prakash Paranjpe had represented the Thane constituency for three terms and was close to Thackeray. Despite that closeness, he did not follow Thackeray to his new party and remained with the Sena. Anand has so far won a by-election and the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Another surprise visitor to Thackeray was Surendra Shetty, whose daughter, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, is to marry London-based Raj Kundra on November 22 at Khandala. Thackeray was invited to the reception at the Grand Hyatt on November 24.
