In a record collection of donations during the Ganeshotsav, the total cash donated to Lalbaugcha Raja is a whopping Rs 8.08 crore.
The Lalbaug Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal’s daily counting closed on Thursday. Last year, the mandal’s cash collection added up to Rs 7 crore.
The gold and other precious metal objects donated by devotees will be sold in a three-day auction starting on Friday at the mandal office in Lalbaug.
The organisers are expecting to cross the Rs20 crore mark after auctioning the donations in kind, which includes diamonds, gold, silver and a Cartier watch. Last year, Rs 10 crore was collected through the auction.
“The daily counting system helped maintain clear records of the cash registered,” said Rajendra Lanjwal, treasurer, Lalbaug Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal. “This year, we received more foreign currency as compared to previous years,” he added.
Earlier, the donations were counted at the end of the 10-day festivities. However, several currency notes were damaged due to the dampness and weight of the donations in kind, following which the daily counting system was introduced in 2008.
The total money that is collected is used to support a social cause.
“Last year, we used it to set up a dialysis centre and a library to support the underprivileged. We are still contemplating what to do with this year’s collections,” said Ashok Pawar, president of the mandal.
