Infidelity by a 54-year-old railway engineer led to the death of a 45-year-old woman in Parel after she fell from the second floor of a building on Thursday night.
Surendra Chavan, a senior engineer in the budget department of the railways, panicked after his wife turned up unexpected and asked his paramour, a commercial sex worker according to the police, to leave his third-floor house using a bed sheet. In the process, the deceased, identified only as Julie, fell down and succumbed to injuries early Friday morning. The Bhoiwada police arrested Chavan later in the day.
Chavan was startled when his wife knocked on the door of their house in building no 66 of railway colony at Parel, the police said.
“Chavan was expecting her to return from her parents’ house two days later,” said Vikram Patil, senior inspector, Bhoiwada police station.
“When Chavan did not open the door, his wife got suspicious of a woman being present in the house. She locked the door from the outside, and left for her in-laws’ residence in Kurla to get him caught red-handed,” added Patil.
DCP (zone 4) Keshav Patil said, “Chavan then took a bedsheet, tied one end to a knob on the balcony window and asked Julie to climb down with it. However, the bedsheet extended only till the second floor, because of which she was left hanging mid-way.”
Keshav Patil added, “Chavan then cleaned up and went to open the door, but realised it had been locked from outside. Meanwhile, Julie lost grip of the bedsheet and fell to the ground.” She sustained severe injuries to the head, the police said.
With the door locked, Chavan also descended to the ground floor through the balcony. “The watchman has said that Chavan told him he was going to get an ambulance to get Julie to the hospital,” added Keshav Patil.
“Realising that Chavan had fled when he did not return for an hour, the watchman contacted others in the building and rushed Julie to JJ hospital, where she was declared dead,” added Keshav Patil.
The Bhoiwada police caught Chavan in the evening. Keshav Patil said, “Chavan has been arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.”
