The Nivara Hakk Suraksha Samiti, an NGO headed by actor Shabana Azmi has opposed the state’s move to build skyscrapers to rehabilitate the city's slumdwellers. It also wants chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to reserve all slum land, which is 9% of the city's total area, for rehabilitation of the slum residents.

“We don't want the state to trade slum land for building houses for the rich,” she said, insisting that slumdwellers would be unable to afford the maintenance costs of high-rise buildings.

“There should be a cap of 8-10 floors for such buildings.”

There is a proposal to build five 24-storey high-rises in Chandivli for slum projects, though Chavan has not cleared it yet.
