State to conduct own medical entrance test

The state government has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling to quash the NEET for medical admissions and said it will re-introduce its own entrance test Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (MSCET) from next year.

The state government has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling to quash the NEET for medical admissions and said it will re-introduce its own entrance test Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (MSCET) from next year.

However, Vijaykumar Gavit, minister for medical education on Thursday assured students that the SC ruling would not affect the admission process in the state this year.

“We will re-introduce the MSCET from next year. The state has the logistics and manpower to conduct the exam,” said Gavit.

The minister also said that students from the state had

to suffer this year because

of the Centre’s lack of manpower.

Further, to avoid sharing 15% of seats with students from other states under the national quota, the state has decided to form the Maharashtra Medical Education and Research Society.

The society, which will work as a self-financed institution will not be forced to comply with the national quota.

Presently, it is mandatory to reserve 15% seats for the national pool, which is occupied by the students from other states. Of the 2,060 seats in 14 medical colleges, 309 are reserved under this.

Although the state cannot ignore this quota, the society will help allot all seats in the six new medical colleges that have been planned, to students from the state.
