The 1,042 page charge sheet accused Palande, his alleged wife and model Simran Sood, and Dhananjay Shinde, with the kidnapping and murder of Kakkad. Crime branch sources, however, revealed that other persons including one of the associates of Shinde, Manoj Gajkosh, and Gautam Vora, who were also arrested in connection with the case, have not been made accused due to lack of evidence.

As per the prosecution’s theory, Simran Sood, Vijay Palande and Karankumar Kakkad were fast friends. The crime branch had claimed that Palande had befriended Kakkad to grab his property and take away his money. Palande came to know that Kakkad was into cricket betting and had just lost Rs. 2 crore while betting. Assuming that Kakkad was lots of money, Palande, with the help of his associates, hatched a conspiracy to trap him.

Kakkad had gone missing on March 6. A missing complaint was, however, registered on March 9 at the Amboli police station. While police were in search of Kakkad, Palande, during the investigation of the murder case of senior citizen Arun Tikku, confessed that he had killed Kakkad at his Oberoi Springs apartment in Andheri (west).

The crime branch had further claimed that after killing him they had chopped his body into pieces. They then searched the house for money and other valuables, and also for bags to dispose of Kakkad’s body. Police later recovered decomposed body parts of Kakkad from forests at Kumbharli Ghat in Chiplun in Ratnagiri district.
