Only, the gun was fake.
The police arrested Ratnakar Chaskar, son of a fruit wholesaler and a resident of Sector 16 in Vashi.
On Thursday, Chaskar hired a rickshaw from Vashi bus depot to Juhugaon. When the driver, Ajay Vadkar (40), a resident of Koperkhairane, reached the destination, Chaskar asked him to return to Vashi, said Raosaheb Sardesai, senior police inspector, Vashi police station.
On the way back, Chaskar whipped out a toy gun and demanded that Vadkar hand over all his money to him.
Vadkar managed to call the police, who reached the bus depot within minutes and arrested Chaskar.
“The gun looked real,” said Sardesai. “But we realised that it was just a toy and arrested him.”
Sardesai said Chaskar wanted to buy beer but did not have the money.
The police added that Chaskar does not have any criminal record and comes from a well-to-do family.
The police have booked Chaskar under Section 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.
