Watchman leaps to death

A 45-year-old security guard posted at Vashi railway station committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of a tower in the station complex on Monday.

A 45-year-old security guard posted at Vashi railway station committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of a tower in the station complex on Monday.

Savlaram Gaikar, who hailed from Junnar taluka in Pune district, was a resident of Kopar Khairane.

Eyewitness Baburao Vashiwale, a guard posted in the complex, said: “At around 12.15 pm, I saw him [Gaikar] standing on the boundary wall of the complex deck. I rushed to catch hold of him, but he screamed and jumped and fell on the railway tracks.”

Gaikar was rushed to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hospital in Vashi where he succumbed to his injuries.

Gaikar did not leave a suicide note. The Vashi railway police are investigating the case.

Gaikar was registered with the Security Guards Board, Bhandup, and had been working for 15 years. He is survived by his wife a son who studies in Class 11 and a daughter.

His family was not available for comment.
