A fellow officer said that during the probe into the Telgi scam, he was hand-picked by senior officers for the probe. “There was a time when we used to go to him in case of doubt and to understand how to take an investigation forward. He was respected for his expertise,” the officer said, adding he was considered an authority on underworld matters.

Mahabole’s name came up infamously in the Hasina Parkar (Dawood Ibrahim’s sister) case where he was suspended for allegedly demanding Rs two lakh from a builder and his brother in connection with this case. The Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) has now given him a clean chit.

“He has the biggest network of informers in south Mumbai and perhaps the best insight into the D-gang,” the reporter said.

Recently, Mahabole was also accused of falsely implicating a fisherwoman, Rahima Shaikh, and senior inspector Sanjeev Kokil of MRA Marg police, in an extortion case.
