Though the government plans to link its welfare schemes to the card, Chavan clarified that those who have not made their Aadhaar cards yet will not be deprived of direct cash transfer or subsidies.

Chavan was replying to a calling attention motion raised by Jitendra Awhad, Shashikant Shinde (NCP) and others. Admitting that the work in the first phase was slow, Chavan said that 404 registrations units were engaged in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. In a month or two, more units would be pressed into service taking the total number of kits in the state to 2,200.

The state ranks second in the completion of work on Aadhaar in the country. With 84%, Wardha district is at the top while Sindhudurg is at the bottom with 15%. The implementation of the direct cash transfer facility using Aadhaar would take some time. “We hope to complete the distribution of the cards by then. We plan to provide more machines to meet the deadline,” said Chavan.

Pune-based Yashada and Mahaonline have been given the joint responsibility of verification of UID data. So far, data from 351 centres has been verified. Chavan said that the government would rope in some branches of nationalised banks and census agencies for the work. The state also plans to start new registration centres at colleges, schools and group housing societies for the convenience of the people.
