The self-styled spiritual leader Radhe Maa, booked in a dowry harassment case, has said she will set herself ablaze if found to own ill-gotten wealth.
“Let the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe me,” said Radhe Maa alias Sukhwinder Kaur, who made a media appearance in a plush duplex in Walkeshwar area of south Mumbai on Monday. “If they find anything in my account, I am ready to set myself ablaze or even bury myself. I am innocent, pure and pious,” said Kaur in English.
The duplex, Indrabhavan, belongs to a cousin of Sandip Gupta, co-accused in the dowry harassment case filed by 32-year-old Niki Gupta.
The police have not questioned Radhe Maa and other accused so far, as she has been visiting religious places after the FIR was registered.
“It has been alleged I am running from the police. I went to Nanded Sahib to pray for my late father’s soul,” said Kaur. “I have not hurt anyone. Devotees come to me. The Almighty ends their troubles and I get credit for a miracle. Why should I ask anyone for money when lakhs of rupees are showered on me everyday?"
A lawyer, Falguni Brahmbhatt, has written to the Borivli police about Kaur, alleging she is running a business in the name of religion. Some pictures and a video of Kaur in western clothes went viral online recently. Brahmbhatt’s letter says Kaur should be booked for obscenity and she has hurt religious sentiments by indulging in such acts.
Sanjeev Gupta, managing trustee, Mamtamai Shri Radhe Guru Maa Charitable Trust and cousin of accused Sandip Gupta, said, “The video of Radhe Maa playing in a garden has been portrayed in the wrong manner. Can’t I play with my mother in a garden?”
Another member of the Gupta family said, “Radhe Maa’s modern outfits were not obscene. She wore them to make herself comfortable while resting in her private room.”
The Kandivli police said they would question Kaur on Friday.
“Statements of Niki’s family members have been recorded. We are now recording the accused’s statements,” said Mukund Pawar, senior inspector, Kandivali police.
The police are probing if the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013, can be invoked in the case.
