Thirty-six policemen of the of the 168 with the Nehru Nagar police station's constabulary were given suspension orders on Wednesday for allegedly taking a bribe, while a senior police inspector was suspended for dereliction of duty the next day.

“Those suspended are at fault because they went to Mohammed Khan to take a few hundred rupees. But Khan had called and encouraged them to take the money,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

Policemen attached with the Nehru Nagar police station stated that those suspended were feeling “shameful”. “One of the constables refused to go home. There are others who are concerned as to how they will face their kids and relatives,” said another officer.

Meanwhile, Lakhmi Gautam, deputy commissioner of police, zone 6, who is heading the investigation, said that they would take into account what both parties had to say and a thorough investigation would be carried out.

“The staff crunch will be taken care of by the commissioner's office,” he added.
