“On November 30, Kaniamma Reddy and her accomplice visited Dadu-Babu slums with the intention of stealing a baby and sell it,” claimed an officer from the Amboli police station. They found a door at the chawl open and a baby girl unattended. Reddy wrapped the five-day-old in a towel and was about to sneak out, when the mother, entered the room to check on her girl.

“On seeing them, the mother raised an alarm and her mother-in-law, who was standing outside, caught Reddy,” the officer added. The other woman managed to escape. Assistant police inspector R Kane said, “We are interrogating her to find out about her accomplice.”

The police are, however, having a tough time interrogating her as she only speaks Telugu.
