Except God, nothing is original, says Bollywood composer Anu Malik
The singer-composer deflects charges of plagiarising songs throughout his career; says he might take up acting offers now.music Updated: Jan 26, 2015 17:31 IST
He was a popular Bollywood music composer through the mid-1980s and '90s. He composed hits for films like Baazigar (1993), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Virasat (1997) and Border (1997) and sang numbers like Oonchi hai building (Judwaa; 1997) and Ek garam chai ki pyali (Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega; 2000). Though he hasn't been active on the industry's music front, Anu Malik now hopes to take up more music assignments.
You don't compose much now.
I am like a scorpion that has now woken up. I was busy doing television and concerts. But now, a lot of producers have asked me to return to Bollywood.
Do enough offers come your way?
I get a lot of offers, but I choose the ones I want to associate with. I sang in The Shaukeens (2014) recently and have another track coming up in Anees Bazmee's next.
You have been criticised for allegedly plagiarising songs.
Except God, nothing is original.
Bollywood music has changed since your heyday. I feel the change has been in terms of technology. People now work on different formats. Because of the Internet, people have become used to EDM, which is the current flavour. I believe in melody and I'll bring it back in Bollywood. Since people are craving for change, I am being approached by film producers.
You've been judging a reality show since its inception. While reality shows are platforms for new talent, it's believed that they have resulted in an overdose of singers.
If there are more singers, there is more competition. And if there is more competition, people will deliver their best.
But doesn't this reduce the shelf life of singers in the industry?
I feel singers are always recognised. You will see good singers getting their worth.
You appear a lot on TV. Do you ever plan to act? I have been offered acting assignments. I was offered Bigg Boss several times, but I chose not to leave my music. If a good role that suits my personality comes my way, I don't mind taking it up.
Who are your favourites among the current lot of singers?
I like Arijit Singh, Papon, Mohit Chauhan, Monali Thakur and my daughter, Anmol Malik.
