If I had done what everyone (in my field) was doing, I would’ve been lost. I think people love me for my style,” says the man behind songs such as Ek garam chai ki pyali ho, Oonchi hai building, and Do me a favour, let’s play Holi, among others.

Son of composer Sardar Malik, Anu debuted in the late 1970s and got his due with the success of Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee. He is happy that even today people wait for his songs. “I always felt that if I want to make a mark, I had to come up with a different style — Anu Malik style. Even today people wait for that kind of music,” says Anu, who has composed the songs, Babli badmaash, and Aala re aala for Shootout At Wadala.
