With modern-day technology that can turn anyone into a singer, background singers have become replaceable, says Bollywood singer and politician, Babul Supriyo. “Aaj kal software ke zariye koi bhi singer ban sakta hai. No one depends on a singer for recording songs now,” he says.

Even sadder, Supriyo says, is that people take pride in saying that they haven’t learnt music. “Aaj kal ek fashion ban gaya hai ki log kehte hain ki unhe gana nahi aata. Abhi koi reality show by the name of Bathroom Singer aaega, toh woh bahut hit hoga. Agar yahi show 15 saal pehle aata toh log unhe joote maarte,” he says.

But the 45-year-old, who recently released an album titled Dreamgirl with actor Hema Malini, feels that the increasing competition because of new software is forcing singers to better themselves. “Maza usi mein hai ki competition ko harake aap aage aao. Ab agar meri beti bolti hai ki use Yo Yo Honey Singh ke songs ache lagte hain, aur uske doston ko bhi ache lagte hain, toh iska matlab hai ki logon ko waisa music pasand aa raha hai. So, as a musician, you have to reinvent yourself,” he says.
