CHENNAI: The AIADMK on Sunday claimed that Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was well on the road to recovery, and was busy running the government from her Apollo hospital bed.

The ruling party made this declaration as fresh rumours of her ill-health began doing the rounds on social media. “Amma is recovering very well,” said party spokesperson C Saraswati.

Acting governor Vidyasagar Rao had made a brief visit to Apollo hospital on Saturday night to enquire about Jayalalithaa’s health, then left without making a statement to mediapersons assembled outside. The Raj Bhavan later issued a formal press release, stating: “The governor was happy to note that the chief minister is recovering.”

“Amma works 22 hours a day,” said Saraswati.

“We want her to get some rest. The government is functioning as usual.”

The party spokesperson rejected calls from DMK leader M Karunanidhi to dispel rumours by making a photograph of Jayalalithaa public. “The party answers only to the people, and not to the opposition,” she said.

A British doctor, who specialises in cases involving organ failure, was flown in on Friday to act as a consultant. He will be a part of the medical team attending to Jayalalithaa for the next few days.

Lack of official information from Apollo hospital and the ruling party has exacerbated rumours surrounding the six-time chief minister’s medical condition. Despite warnings of legal action from the Chennai police, many even claimed that she has died.
