On the night of May 15, four men the police identified by their first names as Prashant, Akhil, Gaurav and Varun, abducted Mohit Nagar (27) in a white Honda Amaze, pumped five bullets into him, and dumped his body in a canal in order to avoid repaying Rs 10 lakh they had borrowed from him in Ecotech 3 area of in Greater Noida.

According to the police, the men returned to the neighbourhood after the crime and misled the family in ‘searching’ for the victim.

The police said Mohit lived with his wife, three children and parents in Saini village.

Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar, said the suspects befriended him and took a loan of Rs 10 lakh from him and refused to return it later on.

“On the night of May 15, Mohit went missing. His family filed a complaint alleging that four neighbours—Prashant, Akhil, Gaurav and Varun—had ostensibly taken him out for a drive. They suspected their role because Mohit had loaned Rs 3 lakh to Prashant and Rs 7 lakh to Gaurav and had heated arguments in the past over non-payment of the said loans,” he said.

Mohit’s younger brother Vikas Nagar said the suspects had called his brother and asked him to collect the money that night. “My brother had informed us and left the house. But he did not return and we were concerned. In the morning, the suspects came to our home and expressed sympathy, pretending they did not know anything,” he said.

The police team picked up Prashant and Gaurav and questioned them thoroughly.

“During interrogation they admitted to have murdered the victim and dumped his body in Kherli Canal. We recovered the body which had five bullet injuries. We also recovered four countrymade guns and the car used in the crime,” SSP Krishna said.

A case of murder was registered against the four men in Ecotech 3 police station.

They were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody.
