Police seized 22 cartons of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday while 28 more cartons of IMFL were destroyed when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) smuggling liquor overturned near a police checkpost in Noida.

While the driver of the SUV managed to flee, police recovered 22 IMFL cartons from the vehicle. The alcohol was for sale in Haryana and was being transported via Delhi to Uttar Pradesh. In the National Capital Region, liquor is available cheapest in Faridabad and is the most expensive in Gautam Budh Nagar and other areas of Uttar Pradesh due to a separate excise tax system.

According to the police, they received a tipoff about smuggling of IMFL in a Xylo coming from Delhi.

“At 1.30am on Wednesday, we received in formation that a Xylo, with number plate UP 16 CT 1957, was coming via the elevated road from Delhi. We were told that the vehicle was carrying alcohol and if apprehended in time, the driver could arrested and the smuggled liquor seized. We set up a checkpost near Sector 61 where the elevated road ends,” said Anil Pratap Singh, station house officer, Sector 58 police station.

“When we asked the driver to stop at the check post, he panicked and tried to speed away. However, in his frenzy, the driver hit the divider and the vehicle overturned. In the chaos that ensued, the driver fled the scene,” he said.

Police claim that the accused in the SUV was carrying around 50 cartons of IMFL.

“Around 28 cartons of IMFL were destroyed in the accident and we managed to seize only 22 cartons of liquor from the vehicle. The accused probably intended to sell these cartons in Noida or Greater Noida,” Singh said.

Police are now tracking the owner of the vehicle using the vehicle’s licence plate and other documents seized from the SUV.

“A case has been registered against one unknown accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for smuggling liquor . The driver will be caught soon and we are also trying to track the owner of the SUV,” Singh said.
