Even as police scramble without success to arrest a 28-year-old man who brutally slashed the throat of his newly married neighbour, people in the locality have started pointing fingers at the victim.
Instead of supporting the 26-year-old woman, who has undergone two operations and is unable to speak, her neighbours and family members have ostracized her on the suspicion that she may have been having an affair with the accused.
This story, from a locality in Sahibabad, is fast emerging as another case of victim blaming that often follows crimes against women in India.
The woman got married on March 4 and arrived to celebrate her first Holi after marriage with her widowed mother. She was attacked by her neighbor Rajiv Kashyap, 28.
Several police teams in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are in pursuit of Kashyap even as the woman fights for her life at the hospital. With some local media reports referring to the accused as the woman’s ‘’aashiq (lover)”, the woman and her family are now being blamed for the incident.
“Her in-laws and husband arrived on the day of the incident itself and have not left since then. Now, they have become suspicious and are inquiring. We are more disturbed as it is a new marriage and their suspicion may ruin it. Her mother is troubled,” said Nahar Singh, woman’s uncle.
“We have tried to convince them (in-laws) that had there been a love affair, she would have not married someone else. But their suspicion is growing day by day. I don’t know what will happen next... There were some local media reports that mentioned the accused as her ‘aashiq (lover)’. This has also fuelled their suspicion,” he added.
The victim lost her father 5-6 years ago and has a younger brother who is mentally unstable.
“Our surveillance teams found him in Rajasthan but he escaped from there. Then he was traced to Deoria and we have sent teams there. The woman is unable to speak after the operations. She had told doctors that she was attacked as the man wanted to marry her. We will take up her detailed statements once she recovers,” said Anup Singh, circle officer (Sahibabad).
In their complaint, the victim family stated that Kashyap attacked the woman as she rejected his proposal. The woman was alone in her mother’s house when Rajiv barged in and attacked her.
“She is still in the ICU. The doctors have advised her not to speak and have not allowed us near her due to fear of infection. She has not given her statement as doctors have advised her not to speak as she may lose her voice,” her uncle said.
