The sight of Novak Djokovic, last year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, in a pair of dazzling white sneakers at the Red Carpet surprised all. And it’s going to be repeated in this year’s Awards ceremony too.

Sporting superstars including Simone Biles, Nico Rosberg and Alessandro Del Piero will step onto the Red Carpet in Monaco ahead of the Awards and the world will be waiting to find out which sneakers they will be wearing to accompany their tuxedos and ball gowns.

Laureus Academy Member and athletics legend Michael Johnson will wear his limited edition gold trainers to commemorate 21 years since his record performance at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Brazilian football icon Cafu will also roll back the years and wear the boots he wore in a World Cup Final.

Laureus Academy Member and football legend Carles Puyol kicked off the #SneakersforGood campaign by telling his 25m social media followers of his intention to lace up his sneakers for the Laureus Awards.

While sending a message to the world that Laureus’ Red Carpet can be a sporting field, #SneakersforGood will also help support Laureus’ partner Sal’s Shoes, who collect pairs of shoes and distribute them to those in need around the world. A selection of guests who walk the Red Carpet will also wear ‘special edition’ sneakers, which will then be auctioned off for the benefit of Laureus Sport for Good and Sal’s Shoes.

“It was great to see so many pairs of sneakers on the Red Carpet last year, everyone got involved to show their belief in the power of sport. I’m looking forward to getting involved this year again and I hope as many guests show their support and wear their sneakers in Monaco,” Puyol said
