The award, which carries a bronze plaque, a certificate and a cash prize of rupees two lakh, was presented to Bhakti in the presence of Nandini Sardesai, wife of late cricketer Dilip Sardesai, who played for India between 1961 and 1972.

A former Asian Youth Girls U-14 champion, Bhakti is the first chess player to have received the award.

Earlier, Mahesh Gawli, Climax Lawerence (both football) and Talasha S Prabhu (swimmer) have been conferred with the award.

Bhakti was one of the two sportspersons, the other being chess player Nitesh Bellurkar, who had applied for the prestigious award this year.

The international master recently finished seventh with 8.5 points at the World Junior Championship in Chennai. She had though suffer a loss of 22 precious ELO points after the tournament.
