Top seed Tania Sachdev fought back strongly to defend her National Women’s title with a resounding victory against overnight leader Kruttika Nadig of Maharashtra in the 35th Parsvnath National Women Chess Championship at Russian Centre on Friday.
Kruttika and Tania shared the top spot with 6.5 points apiece.
Playing with the white pieces, Kruttika found herself into a comfortable position in the middle game, but failed to capitalise. Kruttika made crucial mistakes in the end and played into Tania’s hands, who sealed the game in 93 moves. Kruttika had something to cheer about as she achieved the nine game Woman GM norm.
Soumya Swaminathan, who defeated Padmini Rout of Orissa, finished second with 5 points, while GM Swathi Ghate overcame third seed Eesha Karavade of Maharashtra.
Round 9 Results: Pon N Krithika (4.5) drew with Amrutha Mokal (4), Bhakti Kulkarni (4) drew with Kiran Manisha Mohanty (3), Swathi Ghate (4.5) beat Eesha Karavade (4.5), Padmini Rout (3.5) lost to Soumya Swaminathan (5), Kruttika Nadig (6.5) lost to Tania Sachdev (6.5), Nisha Mohota (4.5) drew with Mary Ann Gomes (3.5).
