At least, the life prisoners in Buxar jail have established this with great elan and pride.

When Chief Minister Nitish Kumar starts his Vikas Yatra from Bagaha district on February 19-20, he would be using a water-resistant tent material for his Swiss cottage, which these very prisoners have woven.

The perseverance of the prisoners, who earned Rs 1 crore and more in the last fiscal by way of preparing clothes and ropes, was well known. And, when the central prison facility was informed that the Bihar Government had chosen their work to shield the high and the mighty of the land, the doomsday environment within the jail has turned into one of gaiety and mirth.

The jail superintendent of Buxar central prison, said “they are happy. The prisoners are taking pride in the event and will be watching out for all news emanating from Bagaha. In the last ten years, the prisoners have woven 1400 GS poll tent for the police forces round the country. This year, the prison has received orders to manufacture 25 Swiss cottage tents within the month. The prisoners are on the verge of completing the order”.

The prisoners of Buxar jail have been at other pursuits also. They manufacture caustic soap, lifer soap, phenyl, handloom durees and mattresses, tarpaulin, range umbrellas, quilts, blankets for prisoners, among other things. Last year, the jail secured orders for nearly Rs 1 crore. The entire profit is deposited with the government, of which 5 per cent is given to the jail. In fact, the ropes woven by the prisoners are the ones used by the hangmen across the country.
