Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Sitamarhi, about 200 km from Patna, to vent their ire against the killing of Anil Kumar, a businessman in his 20s who was shot dead on Sunday night by unidentified criminals while he was on his way home after closing his showroom.

According to a relative, Kumar was killed because he was refusing to pay extortion money to a gangster.

The killing led to protesters attacking a police vehicle and setting ablaze a police station.

According to official sources in the district administration, police opened fire to disperse the mob resulting in one person being killed and two being critically wounded.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the town and the administration has appealed for peace.
