A high-velocity dust storm hit parts of north India on Monday night with wind speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour, the Met office said adding the squalls are likely to continue. “The actual storm is expected to hit today towards afternoon and evening. We are expecting lightning, thunderstorm, rain and gusty winds that could reach up to 70 km per hour,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior scientist with the regional meteorological office. At least one pilgrim died and hundreds, including former chief minister Harish Rawat and Rajya Sabha member Pradeep Tamta, were stranded on Tuesday after a fresh spell of snowfall at the Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines in Uttarakhand. Snowfall of about five inches has been reported at Kedarnath, which has disrupted helicopter services and pilgrim movement. (ANI)

The Calcutta high court on Tuesday directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to accept the nominations of those who had sent their papers to the poll panel via e-mail for the upcoming West Bengal panchayat election, if they were found to be valid. The court passed the order on an appeal filed by the CPI(M) and directed that it pertained to those candidates, whose names appeared in the list submitted by the appellant before it. (PTI File)
