Photos: Rain pounds Kerala, Met issues Code Red
Indian Meteorological Department has predicted widespread heavy rainfall in the state of Kerala for the next three days. 30 people have died so far. Overflowing rivers and dams flooded several districts amid heavy rains, forcing authorities to move 800 families to safer places. The respite is not in sight yet, as the Met Office issued a red code warning early today for the states along the western coast.

An orange alert was issued for Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Orange alert was also issued for Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kasargod districts for Thursday. All schools and colleges in Malappuram and Wayanad districts will remain closed. (ANI)

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sought Army and Air Force help as weathermen predicted more rains in the next two days. In worst-hit Kerala district Wayanad, which is also Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency, many areas still remain cut off with roads caving in and several people are feared trapped in a massive landslide in Meppady.There has been 260 mm of rain in Wayanad so far. A truck is stuck under a fallen tree amid heavy rain in Cheruthoni. The Cochin International Airport, where flight operations were suspended till midnight Friday after floodwaters inundated the apron area (parking), will remain closed till 3 pm on Sunday. However, the CM Vijayan said that Kochi naval base can be used as temporary airport and the talks with the navy are on. (ANI)
