First year engineering mechanics paper of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) went viral minutes after the exam began on Wednesday morning, but the university officials have refused to call it as an incident of paper leak.

While SPPU officials initially confirmed the incidence of a leak of the engineering examination question papers, later in the day, the matter was dismissed as a hoax. In its press release, SPPU stated that someone deliberately spread wrong information that it was a paper leak.

According to the university officials, a police complaint will be lodged against mischievous people for spreading wrong information and strict action will be taken, in case any involvement of the college is found in the matter.

In order to get more details, the university had deployed a team of three officials to investigate the matter and find concrete information. The team later concluded that the paper leak was a rumour.

The first year of mechanical engineering batch had appeared for the subject, engineering mechanics, from 10 am to 12 pm. The question papers had arrived at the centre in MIT, Kothrud at 9.40 am and after distribution at 10 am, they were said to have been posted online, making it viral. However, the university denies to acknowledge this as a leak.

“Although the investigation is still on, what we know is that after the exam began at 10 am, someone who had access to the question papers, took photos of it and posted them online, thus making them viral. However, we still have not been able to track down the miscreant(s) or the exact time when the papers went viral , butonce we do, strict action will be taken against the people involved,” saidAshok Chavan, the controller of examinations, SPPU.

Recently in Nashik, two engineering students,Chinmay Atharvalkar (21) and Adesh Chopade (21), who were directly involved in the Nashik paper leak through hacking, were sent to jail.
