Neighbour arrested for sexual assault, murder of two-year old Pune girl

The crime branch of Pune police arrested a 23-year-old man on Monday for kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of a two-and-a -half-year-old girl from Dhayari, Sinhagad road.
The accused has been identified as Ajay Rameshwar Chaure, alias Bablu, a painter by profession.
The incident came to light in the early hours of Sunday when the girl’s body was found a few metres from her house in the area near Prayeja City, a residential building, the Sinhagad road police said.He was arrested from Dahiwade area of Satara, according to the police. He was brought to Pune and is being questioned by senior police officials.

The child’s mother’s uncle was visiting them that night and was sleeping with the family while Chaure was drinking with one of his friends in a half-built structure near their house, according to Rajendra Sengaonkar, additional commissioner of police, south region.
“Police found blood stains, glass pieces and alcohol bottles in the half-built structure. When Chaure’s friend left, he went and bought another bottle of alcohol and drank it on his way to the area. He is a Class 12 graduate from Osmanabad,” additional CP Sengaonkar added.
While the parents told the police that the doors were latched, Chaure claimed that the metal door was open when he walked in and picked up the girl while her mother was sleeping with her back towards the child, additional CP Sengaonkar said.
Until three months ago, he was living in the same building and had moved to Narayan Peth for contract painting work. The family of the child had moved to the room a month after Chaure moved to Narayan Peth. The 23-year-old was visiting the residence that he maintained in the same building and knew that a new family with a child had moved in the house, the police said.
Chaure had passed out somewhere after committing the crime and left for Satara to harvest wheat for his employer the next morning, according to the police.
The post-mortem report of the child’s body confirmed sexual assault and death by strangulation, according to Pravin Mundhe, deputy commissioner of police, zone 2. A case under Sections 363, 302, 376(i), 376(j), 376(a), 201, 364 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 4 and 6 of Prevention of Children against Sexual Offence Act was registered.
Pravin Mundhe, deputy commissioner of police, zone 2, said, “The doctors have submitted the medical report. It confirms sexual assault. We will be adding Section 376 (of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 4 and 6 of the Prevention of Children against Sexual Offence in the FIR.”
Officials said the girl was found wearing only a T-shirt with scratch marks on one side of her face and the right side of the body.
