An unscheduled meeting, between Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and party’s Satara Lok Sabha member Udayanraje Bhosale, has raised several eyebrows in political circles as Pawar and Bhosale were together for nearly two hours. The duo travelled from Pune to Satara together on Wednesday morning.
Bhosale, who has never lost an opportunity to criticise his own party and Pawar family, told media persons in Satara that Pawar was a great politician and he spent quality time with him. Later, Pawar also travelled with Udayanraje’s cousin Shivendraraje Bhosale from Satara to Karad, giving another surprise to his party workers.
Neither Pawar nor Bhosale gave any details to media persons about their meeting. Bhosale, in his brief interaction, said that he held Pawar in very high esteem and that he was a rare politician. The meeting assumes significance as Bhosale is critical of party leaders in his Satara Lok Sabha constituency.
Udayanraje is known for his rivalry with Assembly deputy speaker Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar and his cousin Shivendraraje Bhosale. In fact, Udayanraje Bhosale has gone on record saying that his own party leaders had implicated him in an extortion case, which resulted in his arrest and bail.
Sources in NCP said that Pawar and Udayanraje were in Pune and had a telephonic talk on Wednesday morning. Pawar was scheduled to visit Satara for a function and he offered Udayanraje to travel together. Udayanraje, member of Satara royal family, immediately agreed and was on the steering wheel for some time.
Later in the noon, Pawar asked Shivendraraje to accompany him to Karad. Both had discussions for an hour while travelling together. Both Udayanraje and Shivendraraje are political rivals in Satara politics and had fielded independent panels in local elections. Bhosale also has tense relations with prominent NCP leader Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, who is considered a close aid of Sharad Pawar.
Sources in NCP said that Pawar may be aiming at truce with Udayanraje in view of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Sambhajiraje of Kolhapur, another branch of Shivaji Maharaj, is moving close to BJP after being appointed as Rajya Sabha member.
