A woman and her two daughters were killed after a fast train heading towards Kalyan hit them while they were crossing the tracks between Thakurli and Dombivli stations on Sunday.

The victims, Anuradha Prakash Kavalkar, 32; Radhika, 8; and Sanchita, 11, are residents of Triveni Nagar in Pune.

Police said Anuradha, her husband and children were heading to Amravati in an intercity train. They wanted to alight at Kalyan, a station the train does not halt at.

“The express train halted owing to a signal. Anuradha and the girls took the opportunity to alight with a few other passengers. A fast train hit them,” said an officer from the Dombivli police station.

Both girls died, while Anuradha, who was still breathing, was shifted to Sion Hospital. “She succumbed to her injuries. We sent the bodies for a post-mortem, after which they were handed over to victims’ family,” he added.

Police recorded the statement of Anuradha’s husband, Prakash. They registered a case of accidental death.
