Wider roads encouraging high speed driving and rising number of vehicles is resulting in more number of accidents in the city. According to the data available with Pune Traffic Department, a total of 132 two wheeler deaths have been registered in the city till July this year. Also, a total of 261 two wheeler riders were seriously injured during the same period.

Even as these figures of fatal accidents, especially of two wheeler riders, continues to increase, the use of helmet is still ignored by most riders.

Many city-based doctors have stated that by wearing helmets, fatal accidents of two wheeler riders can come down by 60% to 90%.

Sharing his views, Dr Shrikrushna Joshi from Lokmanya Hospital said, “We get close to 20 cases per month of two wheeler accidents. It has been observed that fatal accidents of two wheeler riders can be curbed significantly by use of helmets. Helmets act as a shock absorber and help in protecting the head, and inturn the brain, from injuries during an accident.

During an accident, in case the rider is not wearing a helmet, the head has to bear the complete impact, during which, the accident victim can get unconscious and if the impact is severe there can also be death.”

Joshi added that the brain is a very important organ and needs to be protected as it drives all the systems in the body. Neurosurgeon from Ruby Hall Clinic, Deepak Patil, too, shared similar views.

Patil said, “A good ISI mark helmet will help save a person from head injury during accidents. Also, it protects penetration of objects into the head during accidents.”

Patil added that wearing full face helmets with cushioning near the chin can also help save an accident victim from face injuries.

Dr Fiyaz Pasha from Jehangir hospital, stressed that just wearing a helmet is not enough but wearing the right helmet is also very important. He further stated that after an accident there is a proper way in which the helmet has to be removed from the head of the accident victim, which many do not know. Wrongly removing the helmet can also cause injuries, he added.

Ajay Aggarwal, road safety activist

There are several rumors about wearing helmets. The most common reason people give is that wearing helmets affects the spinal cord, resulting in back pain related problems. Many also complain of neck pain due to helmets. The other reason is poor visibility towards the right and left side as helmets obstruct the vision on these two sides. These reasons have no merit and the importance of wearing helmets has been understood across countries and should be followed strictly.

Considering the increasing number of accidents, I always wear a helmet. It also saves me from pollution and sun. Many a times, people travelling short distances do not wear helmets as they feel they will ride at a lower speed or find it uncomfortable to carry the helmet around.

Ruchira Joshi

Whenever I travel on my two wheeler, I always wear a helmet to ensure my safety. I have heard that many people do not find it comfortable to ride with a helmet on or many complain of neck pain. But, if the right helmet is chosen, theres’ no scope for these problems at all.
