Around 12 noon, Dinesh Dabde (35) thrashed Sukhdev Meghraj Mahapur's (43) head with a stone, said police. The men shared the living space on the jail premises where Dabde managed to smash Mahapur's head, said senior police inspector Mukund Mahajan of Yerawada police station.

The deceased inmate was serving three and a half years’ jail term in a case of molestation registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. His term had started in 2017. Dabde was serving a sentence in a murder case, according to senior PI Mahajan.

He said that the man had served over 10 and half years in jail and could have been released next year. The two inmates were assigned work in the jail kitchen. Over a week ago, Mahapur had spilled water on Dabde, enraging him, said senior PI Mahajan. The reason behind the murder was the week-old incident, he said.

The jail authorities alerted Yerawada police who took him into custody.
