As part of the Digital India movement, 11 places in Panchkula will be turned into free WiFi zones under the municipal corporation’s initiative. The first such WiFi zone will be inaugurated at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, on June 6.
Earlier, the MC had plans to strike the deal with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which was charging Rs 62 lakh per year for providing internet services.
Now, a Zirakpur-based broadband firm, Esto Internet Private Limited, has been roped in which will provide free internet services for three years.
“We had almost finalised everything with BSNL and were looking for a CSR partner. However, we thought of holding the process and consider other options. A private broadband firm then came forward to provide these services free of cost for three years after which a contract has been made,” said Jogpal.
“We will be starting with our first free WiFi zone at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3 on June 6,” added Jogpal.
He further added, “The company will not dispense their WiFi hotspot services for commercial purpose. The service is going to be helpful in all aspects for the city. People should utilise the service for productive purpose and not misuse it.”
The free WiFi hotspots are — Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3; markets of Sector 7, Sector 8, Sector 11, Sector 14, Sector 15, Sector 20, Sector 25, Sector 26, Yavanika Park and Nirjhar Vatika Garden, both in Sector 5.
‘1 GB data per day per mobile number’
The company will lay underground optical fibre cables at the spots for the enabling the services. Rahul Makhija, chief technical officer, Esto Internet said, “We will be providing with 1 Gbps (gigabits per second) broadband speed at every spot. An individual will get 1 GB data per day per mobile number.”
He added a user will first have to submit his/her mobile number after which he will receive a one time password (OTP), after which he can avail the free internet facility.
“We have also taken care for the authenticity of the user and the daily usage is restricted to 1GB data per day per mobile number” said Makhija.
