The Sangrur police claimed to have busted an inter-state drug racket and seized about 3700 kg of poppy husk and a truck by arresting two persons.
However, the police have failed to arrest the kingpin of the gang Raghubir Singh of Jalwana in Barnala district but arrested his accomplices Nirmal Singh of Badaundi in Ludhiana district and Gagan Jeet Singh of Veer Nagar Mansa.
Talking to the mediapersons here on Wednesday SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that with the help of counter intelligence wing the district police had managed to make the biggest recovery of 185 bags of poppy husk amounting Rs 75 lakh.
He said that the police was keeping an eye on the activities of this interstate gang working under Raghubir Singh and on Tuesday night the police managed to seize a truck in which 185 bags of poppy husk were buried below bags of onion. According to the driver, they were bringing this poppy husk from Rajasthan.
Besides, the police also seized 540 kg of poppy husk from the rented residence of Raghubir Singh in Ludhiana, the SSP said adding that Raghubir has hired a house of his England-based NRI cousin in Ludhiana and he was operating the poppy husk trade from Ludhiana. "With the help of the Ludhiana police, we had also raided his residence in Ludhiana and seized 540 kg of poppy husk from there also", said the SSP.
Replying to a question about the increasing smuggling of poppy husk in the district, the SSP said: "We cannot say that the smuggling has increased but I can assure you that the cases of seized drugs by the police have increased"
About links of Raghubir Singh with his NRI cousin, the SSP said till date the police did not get any proof of NRI's involvement in this racket but the locals had said that the kingpin had hired the house on rent.
A case has been registered against three persons and the police was also investigating the properties of the kingpin Raghubir Singh.
The SSP also said that during interrogation, the truck driver had admitted that this was his second round and earlier also he had brought poppy husk from Rajasthan to Punjab.
