The lawyers also blocked traffic at BMC Chowk here for more than an hour, followed by a protest march from the session courts to the chowk. They opposed the transfer of the rent controller's powers from the judicial officers to subdivisional magistrates (SDMs). District bar association president Mandeep Singh Sachdev said not all SDMs were law graduates and so it would be difficult for them to handle the rent-control cases. He said the agitation would be intensified, if the government did not withdraw the Act.
