Makkar hails basketball body move to lift ban on turban

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar on Wednesday appreciated the International Basketball federation (FIBA) for allowing players wearing turban to participate in the basketball tournaments.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar on Wednesday appreciated the International Basketball federation (FIBA) for allowing players wearing turban to participate in the basketball tournaments.


In a statement issued here, Makkar said: "After the FIBA banned the players wearing turban from participating in the tournament, the SGPC took up the matter strongly and had written to the FIBA to review its decision. Now, when the FIBA has lifted the ban, the SGPC thanks the sports body."

"Turban is pride of every Sikh and is one of the most important religious symbols. The Sikh community is pleased with the FIBA's decision to lift the ban," he added.
