Police claimed to have nabbed an international drug smuggler and recovered 14-kg heroin worth Rs 70 crore in the international market.
Bathinda zone inspector general of police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranangal, accompanied by Ferozepur range deputy inspector general (DIG) Yurinder Singh Hayer and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manminder Singh, said the accused was held at one of the special nakas that had been laid in the district ahead of the Republic Day.
Crime Investigation Agency inspector Kikar Singh had set up a naka at a bridge on the Saukar Canal in Sabuana village on Thursday night.
After midnight, a police party intercepted two people on a two-wheeler travelling from Sabuana village towards Ferozepur, on the basis of suspicion. However, the due tried to flee when they were signaled to stop.
The team overpowered one of them, later identified as Gurpreet Singh of Pallamega village in Ferozepur, while his accomplice managed to flee under the cover of darkness.
During a search, 14 packets of heroin were recovered from his bags.
Police said Gurpreet, an alleged drug smuggler, had a criminal record, and had visited Pakistan several times. "Further investigation might lead to recovery of more contraband and other material," the IG added.
He said the district police had already made a number of recoveries and registered cases against drug mafia.
