The commissionerate police are still groping in the dark in the double murder case even as one month has passed since the Bhana gang members allegedly killed two youths in Tara Singh Avenue locality of the city.
The victims, Simranjeet Singh and Deepansh, were fatally attacked outside a gym on February 26. The police teams, which were camping in other states on the basis of the inputs, are back in the city.
At present, only one team is conducting the investigation in the case. On Monday, a commissionerate police team was to visit the Amritsar central jail as part of the investigation but they had to stay back due to the scheduled visit of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the murder of a city youth on Sunday.
In their month-long investigation, police teams raided various locations in Bihar, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and also remained there for few weeks to arrest the gang kingpin Daljit Singh Bhana and his accomplices, but to no avail.
The police also had issued advertisements in local channels and circulated posters along with the pictures of the accused in the city. Police teams had also visited many jails in Ropar, Kapurthala, Amritsar and Patiala and met Bhana’s former accomplices and other history-sheeters.
Many history-sheeters had informed the police officials about the possible locations where Bhana could be hiding. The police had raided these locations. The police had also issued look-out notices which were served at various exit points, including airports, seaports and the Nepal border. The airport authorities across India were alerted so that the accused could not fly to other countries.
The police had also examined possible political links of Bhana as certain politicians allegedly shielded him and pressurised the police not to make arrest in the case. As pressure to arrest Bhana mounted, commissionerate police officials also quizzed his former girlfriend in a bid to trace him.
The police had arrested only one accused Balbir Singh Cheema for allegedly conspiring in planning the attack. The victims were to give statement in court against the accused, and coincidentally, 26-year-old Richi Bhagat who was killed with sharp-edged weapons at Mochian Mohalla in Basti Sheikh on Sunday by unidentified persons was also to depose before court in a case.
