Punjab election office seeks weekly progress report from police on law and order
The Punjab state election commission has asked the police to submit weekly progress report with regard to implementation of action plan on the law and order situation in the poll-bound state. Besides, directions have also been issued to other departments including excise and narcotics control bureau to submit their action-taken report on plan prepared for preventing misuse of drugs and liquor.

Earlier, the state election office had asked Punjab police to nab all the proclaimed offenders (POs), gangsters and bail-jumpers as early as possible in view of the assembly elections due early next year.
In an action plan submitted to it, the state police had said they were taking several steps including to review of gangsters, POs at police stations, collecting and generating intelligence to arrest criminals, checking money flow to gangs operating in the state, taking action with regard to disposing of benami properties of gangsters, avoid giving parole to criminals till elections, among other measures, said an official.
Notably, Punjab police faced major embarrassment when a group of armed men stormed the high-security Nabha jail last week in Patiala district and managed to free six prisoners including two militants.
