Punjab is ready for wheat procurement and directions have been issued to all deputy commissioners in the state to put in place arrangements in this regard, Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal said today.

This was stated here on Wednesday by Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal who held meetings with Board officials of Moga Firozepur and Faridkot districts and also with officials of procurement agencies to review the arrangements of lighting and drinking water facilities for farmers.
Later, Lakhowal said as many as 1,769 procurement centers would be established for the procurement of wheat in the state and if required more centres could also be established.
He said that Punjab procured 112.73 lakh metric tonnes of wheat last year. In the ensuing season, the state expected to procure 115 lakh
metric tonnes of wheat.
Lakhowal said Punjab had approached the Centre for speedy shifting of 68 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from the state to other states with the request to direct Railways for early movement of wheat stocks.Otherwise, he warned, Punjab would face wheat stock problem.
