Road rage claimed the life of a 32-year-old Baltana man while leaving his colleague injured near the Bharat Electronics Limited factory opposite Sector 16, Panchkula, late on Tuesday evening. A Chandigarh resident and his two accomplices have been arrested in the case.
The deceased has been identified as Gurdeep Singh, aka Vicky, of Anand Vihar in Baltana in neighbouring Zirakpur. He was stabbed multiple times.
Gurdeep was working as a delivery man with a local distributor for the online shopping site Flipkart. He was accompanied by his colleague Vikram Chand, 22, a resident of Indira Colony, at the time of the incident.
Gurdeep was working as a delivery man with a local distributor for the online shopping site Flipkart.
The incident comes a month after a Chandigarh man died in a case of road rage. A Mohali-based army colonel was arrested following the incident on September 2. He had allegedly roughed up the Sector-37 man after a minor altercation involving their cars on the road dividing Sectors 34 and 44.
In the fresh case, Vikram, who was discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening, told the police that Gurdeep and he were returning home when Gurdeep’s motorcyle brushed past a Tata Indigo car.
The car was being driven by Bunty, a resident of Sector 32, Chandigarh, who runs a meat shop in Budanpur area of Panchkula, close to the crime spot.
“After the minor accident, Bunty entered into an argument with Gurdeep and Vikram, which turned fatal,” said Vikas Kumar , station house officer (SHO)of the Sector-20 police station, where the case has been registered.
Vikram’s father Parkash Chand told HT that the two delivery men requested the accused to let them go as they were getting late for home and even offered to compensate him for any loss to the vehicle.
“But in a fit of rage, he called half a dozen men, who started beating my son and Gurdeep,” said the father.
While Gurdeep died on spot after being stabbed multiple times, Vikram sustained injuries. A police control room (PCR) vehicle that reached the spot shifted the two to hospital. “We got a call about the mishap from the police around 11pm,” said Parkash Chand.
Had no prior animosity: Police
SHO Vikas Kumar said Bunty along with two of his accomplices — Amarjit Sigh, alias Balu, and Sumit — have been arrested on Vikram’s complaint. They have been booked under Sections 302 (murder), 148 (rioting with arms), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
“As the accused had a meat shop in the area, he knew many people living in the neighbourhood, including in Indira Colony. Those arrested lived in these areas only,” he said. The SHO said as per the complainant, they had no prior animosity with the accused. “Six to seven people attacked them,” he said. “The others will be arrested soon.”
Family in shock, want thorough probe
Gurdeep Singh’s family and neighbours are in shock after the incident. The 32-year-old is survived by his wife, Kavita Singh, and two daughters, one of whom is aged 10 and the other 6. Gurdeep was a very sober and hardworking man, said his neighbour Vijay Kumar .
After he lost his father, he was taking care of his mother and other family members too. His elder brother Raj said the entire family is shattered. Kavita has fallen unconscious four times.
“We don’t know how we will come out of this tragedy. All the accused should be arrested at the earliest,” he said. Raj said he will meet police officials on Thursday and ask them for proper investigation.
Gurdeep’s body was cremated on Wednesday evening, after it was handed over to the family after postmortem.
