A group of senior Congress leaders came together on Saturday to express their apprehensions over the alleged inclusion of "agents of the SAD-BJP" in the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC).
They gathered at the local residence of Batala MLA Ashwani Sekri, who incidentally happens to be the secretary in the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
"Bajwa sahib was misled by some people. He too has agreed to review the list," said the Batala MLA.
The leaders claimed that they had come together to discuss the problems that the state Congress was facing in urban areas.
When it was pointed out by the media as why as there was no turbaned leader in the gathering, Sekri responded by saying, "Communal angle should not be given to the meeting."
Sekri claimed that he had the 'green signal' from the party's central high command for the meeting.
"We will hold another meeting in Jalandhar soon and then in Ludhiana or Patiala. Thereafter I will give a detailed feedback to the high command on the problems of the urban Congress leaders and also the issues confronting the common man in cities and towns," said Sekri.
The party leaders claimed that they were not after any post in the PPCC. They pointed out that many of them, including former Tarn Taran District Congress Committee (DCC) chief Dharamveer Agnihotri, had resigned from their PPCC posts.
"We are here for the 'atam samman' (self-esteem) of the urban Congress workers and that of the urban people, who are facing a lot of hardships under the SAD-BJP rule," Sekri added.
The leaders said they were feeling let down and insulted as some people who had tried to damage the party had been included in the PPCC list. They alleged that there was a deep-rooted conspiracy to damage the Congress by those who were backed by the ruling SAD-BJP alliance.
"We will expose these elements when the time comes," Sekri quipped.
Though they claimed that the meeting was not against Bajwa but at the same time they did not hesitate in pointing out that the new PPCC list had led to widespread resentment in the party.
The meeting was attended by around 20 party leaders. Among those present were former deputy speaker Prof Darbari Lal, former Amritsar DCC chief Jugal Kishore Sharma, former Amritsar mayor Sunil Datti, former ministers Rakesh Pandey, Naresh Thakur and Upinder Sharma, former MLA Raj Kumar Gupta, Virender Sharma, GK Loomba, Raman Behal, Ramesh Thakur, Shyam Chadha, OP Bhatia, S Wadhera, and Dharamveer Agnihotri.
