Two Kotkapura doctors jailed for female foeticide

The court of chief judicial magistrate Faridkot has sentenced two doctors from Kotkapura, Dr Alka Gupta and Dr Sneh Prabha, along with four others, under the PNDT (Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act with two-and-a-half-years of imprisonment.

The court of chief judicial magistrate Faridkot has sentenced two doctors from Kotkapura, Dr Alka Gupta and Dr Sneh Prabha, along with four others, under the PNDT (Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act with two-and-a-half-years of imprisonment.

The convicts were found guilty of illegal abortion of Jaspreet kaur, wife of Baltej Singh, a resident of Panjgrain Kalan village, in May 2011.

After the incident came to light, the Faridkot civil surgeon had formed a team of doctors to look into the matter and female foeticide was reported.

The accused doctors had pleaded innocence, claiming that they were being framed. The woman's husband, Baltej Singh, mother Jaswant Kaur, and sisters Mohinder Kaur and Simarjeet Kaur are the other convicts. They have also been fined Rs 10,000 each.
