The teacher unions raised slogans against the Punjab government and demanded proper enquiry into the incident.

The headmistress and two teachers of Government High School in Sunet village near here were suspended from the service on Wednesday, after a protest by the parents of a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by a 13-year-old boy.

The teachers unions-Government School Teachers Union, Math Teachers Union, Democratic Teachers Union, Democratic Employees’ Front, Master Cadre Union, Computer Teacher Union and others-joined hands in favour of the suspended teachers.

Talking to HT, Manoj Kumar, secretary, Master Cadre Union, said, “How can be the teachers held responsible without proper inquiry. The incident was gruesome but teachers can’t check every small activity of students in schools. There is also a need to increase the security in all government schools. The matter should be investigated as soon as possible. A big playground separates boys’ and girls’ toilets so how can the boy take her across the ground, gagged and no one saw it?”

Gurbeer Singh, member of Math Teachers’ Union, said, “The authorities have done injustice with the teachers but we all are standing by them. They should increase the security in schools instead of suspending teachers. If teachers will not be reinstated soon, we will launch a state-wide protest.”

“The authorities should take concrete measures for the security of girls in schools. Teacher’s job is to teach not to run after every student going to the toilet,” said Nakal Virodhi Front president Sukhdarshan Singh.
