The defending champion from Sweden saved four break points in the first set before breaking in the 10th game to clinch the opening set in a tightly-contested tie-break. He next plays Viktor Troicki, who defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic 7-5, 6-3.

San Jose: Second seed Gael Monfils withdrew from the San Jose Open tournament on Friday after defeating American wild card Tim Smyczek 6-4 7-6 in the quarter-finals. The Frenchman aggravated an injured left wrist in his win over Robert Kendrick on Thursday.
