Paucity of space leads to inbreeding among rhinos of Assam’s Pobitora wildlife sanctuary

According to information obtained by wildlife activist Rohit Choudhury under RTI, rhinos in Pobitora wildlife sanctuary, located in Morigaon district (nearly 50 km from Guwahati), are suffering as a large area belonging to the sanctuary has not been demarcated and given to the forest department.

Death toll in Assam floods cross 100; nearly 25 lakh still affected

According to a bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons died at Kalgachia in Barpeta, two more at Kachugaon in Kokrajhar and one at Bhuragaon in Morigaon district.
As on Sunday, nearly 25 lakh people in 2265 villages in 23 of the state’s 33 districts were still affected by floods. Goalpara (4.70 lakh) was the worst affected district followed by Barpeta (3.95 lakh) and Morigaon (3.33 lakh).(PTI)

Assam flood situation continues to be grim; Centre assures Rs 346 crore as relief

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 26 of the state’s 33 districts are still reeling under floods. Nearly 45,000 people uprooted by flood waters are still taking shelter in 391 relief camps.

Mumbai ATS arrests man for threatening to kill Indian cricketers

The accused, identified as Braja Mohan Das, was arrested on Tuesday from his home in Shantipur village in Assam’s Morigaon district, around 80 km from Guwahati, and brought to Mumbai for investigations.

Declared foreigner in 2015, man involved in NRC preparation detained

Police said Khairul Islam was identified as a suspected foreigner along with his family in 2003. He had joined government service as a school teacher seven years earlier. A foreigners’ tribunal in Morigaon declared the family of five foreigners in 2015.
